Nourish Your Qi

In Acupuncture, yin and yang are the polarities we use to balance and harmonize the body. Yin is cold, water or fluids, especially hydration. It is also darkness, the action of rest and stillness, imagine a sun setting energy. Yang is warm, fire or movement, especially energizing. It is also light, the action of boiling water, imagine a sun rising energy.

According to the Chinese calendar, there are a few days each year that are deemed as the most yang, or most yin. On the most yang days, we are given the opportunity to strengthen our qi for the upcoming yin days of the year and vice versa through moxibustion. Moxibustion is the practice of burning mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris), or moxa for short, on particular acupuncture points to support building qi. The most Yang days of Summer are approaching, falling on July 21st, July 31st and August 10th. The ‘dog days of summer,’ we know too well in Charleston, but we may not recognize all we could gain in preparation for the chilliest, darkest part of our year.
