Autumn Nourishment

This time of year, our metal element is most active, and it’s corresponding organ pair, the Lungs and Large Intestine, require the most attention. Conveniently, many of Fall’s veggies + fruits help repair summer’s damage….damage caused by sun exposure and heat. Appropriate diet can also help to cultivate a healthy metal element, which is most active during the fall months, and support a strong immune system.

Principles of a Fall Diet:

→ Open the Lungs

→ Nourish yin (hydration)

→ Promote regular bowel movements – probiotics, digestive enzymes, psyllium husks, flax seed

→ Strengthen the immune system

→ Clear phlegm in Lungs

→ Cook at low temps for longer period of time. More focused preparation.

→ Crockpot, pressure cooker, baking, roasting, casseroles, soups, stews, broths

→ Metal utensils, pressure cooker to support metal element

Foods to Include:

→ Leafy greens, apples, pears, nuts, pork, root vegetables, squash, pumpkin, seasonal produce (think rich colors, burnt-orange, deep purple, and red)

→ Foods that are white and spicy like onions, garlic, horseradish, and leeks, will give your Lungs and immune system a boost

→ Aromatic and spicy flavors that “open the pores” and make you sweat: ginger, black pepper, scallions, help keep the Lungs clear

→ Organic, unprocessed, nourishing foods

→ Cooked foods, hydrating foods

→ Avoid greasy, dairy, heavy, fried foods
