Cupping Therapy Benefits

Cupping is one of our favorite forms of bodywork! It involves momentarily placing fire into glass cups so that the heat creates suction when they are subsequently placed on the skin. We love performing this service in conjunction with acupuncture, or as a stand-alone treatment.

Cupping is unique in its use of counterpressure, lifting the skin and fascia and thereby releasing tension in the underlying muscles. It acts as a form of deep massage and unblocks stubborn stagnation, thereby increasing circulation, alleviating pain, opening the channels, and helping you feel like you have a new body! There is also a wonderful detox element to cupping - pulling stagnation out of the muscles, removing cellular debris, and unblocking physical and emotional holding patterns.

Other benefits and uses of cupping include:

  • Alleviating hip pain and tightness in the IT band

  • Treating rotator cuff injuries

  • Opening the lungs to treat respiratory disorders

  • Improving blood flow in the pelvic cavity to benefit fertility and treat painful or irregular periods

  • Improving sluggish digestion

  • Boosting overall well-being and energy by increasing circulation and oxygenating the cells and tissues

  • Stimulating the lymphatic system and detoxification of cellular waste

  • Relaxing the nervous system to ease anxiety and promote better sleep

  • Releasing muscle tension due to stress

  • Alleviating migraines and headaches

  • Treating nerve compression or numbness and tingling in the legs and arms

  • Decreasing rheumatism and inflammation

There are times when cupping is used with caution or not at all, and this includes during pregnancy and on those with bleeding disorders or damaged skin.

Note: Most people find cupping enjoyable, but if it is ever uncomfortably tight for you, please let your practitioner know so she can lessen the pressure. 💙
